Berlin 2009. Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall which I photographed in 1989 for the Independent Newspaper I returned to photograph the changes that have happened over the past 20 years..NOTE: THE DIAGONAL LINE ACROSS THE ROAD INDICATES THE LINE OF THE WALL. THIS IMAGE IS FROM THE EAST AT LEIPZIGER PLATZ LOOKING TO POTSDAMER PLATZ IN THE WEST. The Tram tracks have still not be connected back up to the west after the wall was built in 1961..Lovely, lovely Ursula. She rescued me from the middle of the road at Leipziger Platz as i was replicating a photograph made 20 years earlier of the trams lines going west to Potsdamer Platz as the East German border guards were taking down the wall from the eastern side. Ursula wanted to talk, her English was beautiful, she is the daughter of a Church Minister who was German American. The family lived in London for 6 years in the 1930's but her Father didn't want to go to the USA as war loomed in Europe prefering to return to Germany. In August 1939 the family moved to Hamburg but were bombed out of their home by the RAF. All survived the war and she lived in Frankfurt and now Berlin. She was in the west as the wall came down and remembers this paticular section being removed....she said that she belived it was good to see the two Germany's back together again...then she spotted her bus and ran for it......I never found out her surname..COPYRIGHT PHOTOGRAPH BY BRIAN HARRIS © 2009.07808-579804
