SEA PALLING ON THE NORFOLK COAST..A PANORAMA PHOTOGRAPH SHOWING SOME OF THE NINE MAN MADE REEFS IN THE NORTH SEA ON THE LEFT WHICH HAVE HELPED TO FORM NEW BEACH WHICH IN TURN PROTECTS THE 40 FOOT HIGH SAND DUNES FROM WHERE THE PHOTOGRAPH WAS MADE AND THE VILLAGE OF SEA PALLING WHICH IS BELOW SEA LEVEL ON THE RIGHT. THE LAND WAS FLOODED IN THE 12th CENTURY AND AGAIN IN 1953..COASTAL EROSION. EAST ANGLIA, ENGLAND. .THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S ENVIRONMENT AGENCY AND LOCAL COUNCILS IN THE REGION SAY THAT THE ONLY AFFORDABLE AND SUSTAINABLE WAY TO MANAGE THE COASTAL EROSION ON THE EAST ANGLIAN COAST CAUSED BY SEA AND RAIN IS TO LET NATURE TAKE ITS COURSE AND ALLOW THOUSANDS OF HOMES, LOCAL BUSINESSES AND FARM LAND TO BE TAKEN OVER BY THE SEA IN A MANAGED RETREAT OVER THE NEXT 100 YEARS. FROM CROMER IN THE NORTH TO SOUTHWOLD AND ALDEBURGH IN THE SOUTH THOUSANDS OF RESIDENTS ARE ASKING WHO WILL BE PAYING COMPENSATION FOR THEIR LOSSES..SEA DEFENCES WHICH CAN COST 20 MILLION POUNDS PER KILOMETRE HAVE NOT STOPPED CLIFFS FROM FALLING DOWN ALONG THE COAST. ROADS END AT THE NEW CLIFF EDGE HANGING IN SPACE WITH JUST A WARNING SIGN. THE EXISTING SEA DEFENCES HAVE BEEN BLAMED FOR SHIFTING THE PROBLEM FURTHER ALONG THE COAST. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME SUCCESSES SUCH AS AT SEA PALLING WHERE NINE REEFS HAVE BEEN BUILT OFF SHORE CREATING NEW SAND BEACHES.
