Jean-Marie Le Chevallier was elected mayor of Toulon during the 1995 municipal , thanks a triangular against UDF candidate and against a PS candidate, under the label National Front . It's Guy Nachin which became his first deputy. Its mandate is characterized by several splits within his own majority.

Elected - single-member National Front on the entire French territory - from the 1st district of Var in 1997 after a duel in the second round with 53.2% of the vote his election was invalidated in February 1998 for three offenses campaign financing. His wife, Cendrine Le Chevallier , was beaten by 33 votes by Odette Casanova (PS) in the by-election following in May 1998 .

Released in 1998 , a book by Jean-Pierre Thiollet devoted to it under the title Le Chevallier short - Portrait truth by his former advisor (editions Laurens, Paris) .

In 1999 , Jean-Marie Le Chevallier left the National Front. Two years later, he lost his tenure as mayor, defeated by Hubert Falco , president UDF of the General Council of Var .
