Berlin 2009. Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall which I photographed in 1989 for the Independent Newspaper I returned to photograph the changes that have happened over the past 20 years..The Berlin Wall area of Bernauer Strasse where the wall was built in 1961 creating the death strip between the West on the left in this photograph and the East on the right. The Soviet style lighting was installed along the death strip as part of the preventative measures to stop people from the east escaping to the west. This area was heavilly populated and many famalies were divided over night prompting many from the east to escape from windows that opened onto the street in the west. The East German Government then destroyed all homes and some churches along the new border as well as bricking up any windows that might be of use in an escape. Tunnels were then constructed from east to west that were used in escaping. The east Germans then dug up a cemetery to widen the death zone. These head stones are waiting to be recycled as they are over 20 years old. The entire area under the death strip is a graveyard and consecrated ground..COPYRIGHT PHOTOGRAPH BY BRIAN HARRIS © 2009.07808-579804
